As a D3 or D4 dental student, you’re likely weighing your options for the future—navigating your path after dental school can be challenging. Whether you’re considering Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD), a General Practice Residency (GPR), or learning on the job, understanding the differences between these paths will help you make an informed decision that sets the stage for your career.

Path Options

AEGD (Advanced Education in General Dentistry)

  • Extends your dental school experience with more patients and less supervision.
  • Typically, a 1-year program, though some last two years, focused on honing clinical skills for general dentists.

GPR (General Practice Residency)

  • Primarily hospital-based, with exposure to emergencies and specialized procedures like endo, implants, and tissue grafting.
  • Usually 1-2 years, ideal for those looking to work in complex medical environments or expand their surgical skills.

Learning on the Job

  • Offers an immediate salary, helping you avoid extra debt from extended schooling.
  • Mentorship is crucial—programs like CDP provide real-time guidance from experienced dentists, offering hands-on learning without the need for postdoctoral training.

Benefits of Postdoc Training vs. Learning on the Job

  • AEGD and GPR programs provide structured environments with supervision to refine your skills.
  • Learning on the job at a supportive practice lets you grow quickly while earning, with continuous mentorship available at DSOs like CDP.
  • CDP’s investment in mentorship and continuing education ensures your career development continues long after graduation.
